You can even add a San disk or something similar to increase the storage too. For a time, I thought the plus version was plenty adequate, until it wasn't. I need the extra stars to be sure I am in the exact place in the sky that I want to be. I had purchased a 128 GB tablet mainly for astronomy, so storage wasn't and isn't an issue.

I found myself frequently star hopping through the main eyepiece, at over 100 power, looking for faint objects, so I called Sim Curriculum and they allowed me to upgrade to the pro version. That could be an issue on a smart phone with 32 Gb or less of storage. I mean, we're talking about money on the order of the tax on one premium eyepiece! And trust me, a good planetarium app will enhance your viewing experience far more than any one eyepiece.Īs far as I'm concerned, the main disadvantage of the Pro version isn't the cost so much as the huge amount of storage that it requires. So from that point of view, it's almost crazy not to buy the Pro version, even if you only use it once. On the other hand, both versions are an absolute steal considering how much functionality they offer. In other words, I think the Plus version is quite adequate for the great majority of amateur astronomers. I look for faint targets like that all the time, but my guess is that more than 80% of all amateur astronomers never do. The extra stars in the Pro version are useful only if you're star-hopping through the main eyepiece (as opposed to the finderscope) and looking for targets faint enough so that they're not obvious as soon as they enter the field of view of a low-power, wide-field eyepiece. There is a smidge of truth in the statement above, but to put this in context, the Plus version already shows more stars than any paper star atlas. I am a pretty hard-core star-hopper, and I went a long, long way with SkySafari Plus before purchasing the Pro version. In my opinion, anyone star hopping with a 6 inch ir larger scope should get the pro version, as it shows many more faint stars than the plus version.
